School was becoming difficult to sit through. Not only were the late nights taking a toll on her, but all Cassie could think about during class was flying. English, math, biology—it didn’t matter. She’d sit in her desk and think about hovering over her apartment rooftop. Half the time, she didn’t hear a word her teachers were saying.

“Have you finished the parachute?” Nikki asked during lunch one day.

“What?” Cassie had spaced out while looking at the tacos on her lunch tray. She could barely keep her eyes open.

“The parachute—have you finished it?”

“What parachute?”

Nikki rolled her eyes. “For the egg drop! You need to make a parachute so the egg will land safely. The project is due on Monday.”

“Right,” Cassie said. “Yeah, sorry. I’ll get it done over the weekend.”

Now Cassie remembered the plan for the egg drop. Nikki had built a cube full of dozens of rubber bands. The egg would be suspended inside the cube, cushioned by the rubber bands to soften the impact. Cassie’s job was to make a parachute that could slow the fall of the half-pound cube (egg included) as much as possible.

“What’s going on with you?” Nikki asked.

“Yeah,” Mario added, “why do you look so tired all the time, and what’s with all the scrapes—”

“I’m fine,” Cassie replied a little too quickly. “Seriously. I just—I just tripped while I was up on the roof.”

“The roof?” Nikki asked. “What were you doing up there?”

Cassie felt her face flush. “Nothing,” she said. “My little brother likes going up there.”

Mario and Nikki exchanged a suspicious glance but didn’t press any further. At least for the moment.

That night, she flew again. Taking off was a breeze now, and floating from one location to another had gotten easier and easier. Danny would shout directions to her, and she would follow his instructions. After successfully moving all over the roof, she began to fly out over the street, just past the edge of the building. Cassie was nervous about it the first time, but after five or six repetitions, she flew confidently over a ten story drop. There was only one problem: she was never able to land the way she wanted. She fell every time.

Without school the next day, Cassie’s practice could go much later Friday and Saturday nights. She spent most of Saturday afternoon practically pacing in her bedroom, anxiously waiting for the sun to go down.

That night after dinner, she sat in the living room with her parents, watching TV. Her phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text from Nikki in their group message with Mario: Movie tonight?

Can’t, she typed back. She looked around the room, trying to come up with something for an excuse. Her eyes landed on her backpack, sitting in the same spot it had been since she got home Friday afternoon. I have a ton of homework.

Boooo! Mario texted in response.

She felt a little guilty but didn’t bother replying, knowing the more excuses she gave, the more suspicious she would seem.
